Lobster Landings

A historical record of Maine’s landed lobster catch, dockside value, and average price per pound from 1950 through 2016.

The long view

From a stable catch to rapid growth

For roughly four decades, Maine lobster landings remained near 20 million pounds annually. The recorded catch began trending upward around 1990, eventually reaching substantially higher levels.

Dockside value also rose in current dollars, influenced by both the larger catch and changing average price per pound. Results were not uniform along the coast: landings vary by location, including county, town, and individual port.

Reading the series

Important reporting notes

Changes in collection requirements affect comparisons across the full historical series.

Dealer collection in 2002–2003

The landings for 2002 and 2003 may partly reflect increased efforts by the state marine-resources department to collect voluntary reports from some lobster dealers. Comparisons with earlier years should therefore be made cautiously.

Mandatory reporting from 2004

Reporting became mandatory in 2004 for Maine dealers purchasing directly from harvesters. That procedural change is another reason to use care when comparing later landings with previous years.

FAQ

Understanding lobster landings

Definitions and cautions for interpreting the historical table.

What does “landings” mean?

Landings are the recorded catch brought ashore and reported through the commercial fishery. They describe harvested weight, not a direct count of lobsters in the sea.

Are the dollar values adjusted for inflation?

No. The values shown are current-dollar or nominal figures for each listed year, so direct comparisons across decades do not account for changing purchasing power.

Why are both pounds and pounds in millions shown?

The exact pounds column preserves the reported total, while the millions column provides a quicker way to see the scale and long-term pattern.

Why should 2002–2004 be interpreted carefully?

Collection efforts increased in 2002 and 2003, followed by mandatory reporting for relevant dealers in 2004. Those changes may affect comparability with earlier records.

Does a higher dockside value always mean a larger catch?

No. Total value reflects both the quantity landed and the average price per pound. Either factor can raise or lower annual value.

Does this table include data after 2016?

No. The preserved historical series on this page ends in 2016; the presentation date does not extend the underlying dataset.
